I love this device and it's a pity that it's still not supported in my ubuntu hardy heron. i'm cheking this site almost every day hopeing it will be supported soon

I've got a satellite - would love to see it working under linux

+1 about the Satelitte, got it too...

Question : what can no-tek-heads do to help the integration of the Satelitte into the list of supported device ? Just answer to me and I'll be pleased to help bringing Satellite to Linux !

Thanks for your work,

Artsun

The best thing you can do is to express your desire for support towards Mackie.

Support Status = Doesn't work

This doesn't work with the latest trunk either. I'd love to help add support for this device, but I just can't find much development support on the site. I don't know where to go.

The Device VME is FF2:200f. I added this to the configuration file.

First of all there appears to be a bug in the current trunk that causes a segmentation fault (failure to accommodate a null string in what appears to be the plug name - I added code to convert to empty string, this seems to have solved the crash).

After solving the segfault, it still appears to have trouble. Detecting the plug it says plug 0 is of type 255 (Unknown). I don't know if that's a problem. The plug name is a null string. I wish I knew where I could go to get some direction from those who understand how the detection process works.

The problem is: we can't tell you how the detection works. Not because we don't know, but because there are several depending on the chipset and firmware used in the device. So even if they use a known and supported chipset in the Onyx, if it doesn't work with what we have, we need the specs from the vendor.

So if you want to see support for this device, please ask mackie for supporting us (it doesn't take much, only a device, some basic specs and a contact to ask questions and get answers).

Hi,
I emailed Mackie and asked for support for the Sattelite, here's the reply:

Thanks for writing. Officially we have no support for Linux and normally
do not release our source code to outside developers. I can put the
request in with our engineering and brand management but I would need
more specific detail on what information you are requesting. The Onyx
mixer used a completely different chipset for Firewire so the driver for
the Onyx Satellite would need to be developed from scratch.
Let me know specifically what information you need to develop a Linux
driver. I will see if I can help.

So, what shall I reply to that? What Information is needed to include support for the Onyx Sattelite in FFADO?

Hi, I contacted Mackie about support for the Onyx Satellite, and they answered to my mail with the following:

Hi,

Glad to read that they answered to you, last time i send an email they didn't answer :)
Any ffado engineer could help us to make it work ?

Thanks,
Artsun

It is important to note that we do NOT require any source code releases from vendors such as Mackie. Of course we would welcome such a release but it isn't essential.

What we do need is documentation about how to control the device. This encompasses things like any on-board mixer the interface may have, methods used to control the hardware (eg: phantom power switches), and how the audio streaming works (assuming it's not AVC compliant). This information would normally be in the form of register maps and so forth. If non-AVC methods are employed to get audio data into and out of the interface, documentation about the packet format used is also useful.

In order to make most efficient use of time, it is also much easier if the ffado developer has physical access to at least one of the devices the driver is being written for. This allows code to be tested and debugged as it is written. Otherwise the developer has to wait for reports from owners of the device whenever changes are made and this can slow down the process considerably.

Hey All,
I sent Mackie an email asking for the device drivers. I got back "Thanks for writing. Unfortunately, we only have the ASIO driver available for XP, Vista, and Windows 7 platforms. Sorry for the inconvenience." from Rebecca.

How would I go about asking for device spec's? Does anyone have any advice on how to get Mackie to cough em up?

Mike

Hi all,
I'm also using the satelitte with my mac, but would be more than happy to use it also on linux!
